Description Create a floral portrait using fabric collage and raw edge machine applique techniques. Choose a day lily or iris to feature in your 8”x10” wall hanging quilt, while exploring fabric collage as a background. Learn raw edge applique techniques and tips for the flowers and leaves. Discuss options for embellishment and finishing, including options for displaying your artwork.
About Your Teacher Karen began quilting in the 1970’s, at her grandmother’s church quilting bee. She branched out into wearable art and art quilting, and enjoys exploring many different surface design techniques. Karen focuses on florals and landscapes, and creates decorative art quilts as well as ecclesiastical art stoles and banners. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries, including a one-woman show in Summer 2020
Supply List Sewing machine with ability to drop or cover feed dogs. Iron and board/mat. Scissors. Tracing paper and pencil. Felt 9”x12” - recommend wool or wool blend. Paper backed fusible 2 pieces 9”x12” for background and flowers, e.g.: Heat N Bond, Wonderunder. Fabrics for background , e.g.: cottons, linens, silks - suggest greens, blues, neutral colors, should contrast with flower fabrics. Fabrics for flowers, leaves, stems eg cottons such as handdyes, batiks, avoid large prints - suggest variety of greens, yellows and oranges for day lily, purples and blues for iris. Machine thread to coordinate. Optional: threads for hand stitching, beads, buttons, pieces of lace to embellish.
